Trauma Therapy for Adults in Sandy, Utah

When The Past Still Feels Present

A difficult experience may be over, yet its effects continue to show up in your life. You might feel on guard, disconnected, easily overwhelmed, or unsure why certain situations bring such strong reactions.

I’m Shilea Cooper, CMHC. At Willow Brook Counseling Center I offer trauma therapy for adults in Sandy Utah and online throughout Utah. My approach includes EMDR, Lifespan Integration, and parts-informed work, tailored to your needs and readiness.

Experiences We Can Explore Together

Trauma can involve a single overwhelming event or experiences that unfolded over time. You don’t need to compare your story with anyone else’s to talk about how it has affected you.

I work with adults navigating concerns connected to:

  • Childhood experiences and difficult family relationships.

  • Medical diagnoses, procedures, hospitalization, or treatment.

  • Betrayal and painful relationship experiences.

  • Accidents, loss, or other overwhelming events.

  • Experiences of criticism, rejection, or emotional neglect.

We’ll explore what feels relevant to you without requiring you to share every detail at the beginning.

How Trauma May Affect Your Life Today

Sometimes the connection to the past is clear. Other times you notice patterns without fully understanding where they began.

You may find yourself anticipating danger, struggling to trust, shutting down during conflict, or feeling responsible for keeping everyone around you comfortable. Certain reminders may bring strong emotions or physical reactions.

In therapy we look at these experiences with curiosity and consider how they affect your relationships, daily life, and sense of self.

My Approach to Trauma Therapy

Our work begins with getting to know you and building a collaborative relationship. We’ll discuss your goals, what helps you feel grounded, and how to recognize when the work feels overwhelming.

You have a voice in what we focus on and when we pause. Preparation, pacing, and regular check-ins are part of the process.

Together we may work toward:

  • Recognizing triggers and understanding your responses.

  • Developing ways to stay connected to the present.

  • Exploring beliefs about yourself shaped by difficult experiences.

  • Processing memories when you feel ready.

  • Practicing boundaries and new ways of relating to others.

EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is a structured approach to working with distressing memories.

After assessment and preparation EMDR may involve bringing a memory to mind while using bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping. We attend to the thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations connected to the experience.

Before beginning I’ll explain the process, answer your questions, and help you consider whether EMDR fits your needs.

Lifespan Integration

Sometimes you know an experience is behind you but your reactions still feel tied to that earlier time.

Lifespan Integration uses a timeline of memories and repeated movement through that timeline to connect past experiences with your life today. Depending on your needs our work may focus on a specific experience or patterns that developed over time.

We’ll discuss what this process involves and make room for preparation, grounding, and support.

Support for Medical Trauma

A medical experience can affect more than your physical health. Diagnosis, treatment, uncertainty, or feeling powerless during care may leave you with fear, grief, or difficulty trusting your body.

I offer space to process these experiences, including distress around appointments, reminders of treatment, and the adjustment to life afterward. We’ll consider your current health needs and emotional capacity as we plan our work together.
